Summary
As the sole UX/UI (Product) designer at Nearby, an early-stage startup based in sunny Orlando, FL, I work closely with cross-functional teams to create products from the ground up. During the summer of 2022, I had the pleasure of working with an intern who provided valuable assistance with UX research and wireframing.
My responsibilities encompass not only overseeing the complete user experience (UX) process for both our mobile and web applications, from conducting research to ideating and developing UI and design systems, but also creating trademark designs and ensuring alignment with the leadership team.
While I can't reveal too many details about our projects due to confidentiality agreements, I'm happy to discuss my work further over a virtual coffee or tea if you're interested. Feel free to shoot me a message!

What I learned
Importance of Recruiting Genuine Participants
I learned that recruiting genuine users for user interviews is critical to obtaining accurate insights. To overcome the challenge of participants being more interested in compensation, I implemented additional measures such as cross-referencing their IP location with their stated location and leveraged my personal network to recruit participants who were genuinely interested in contributing to our research goals.
Effective Communication with Non-Designers
I learned that effective communication and education are essential when working with non-designers. I encountered challenges in ensuring accessibility was considered in our designs, but by taking the time to communicate and educate the C-suite, providing research and WCAG guidelines, I was able to make significant progress. This experience taught me the importance of patience, empathy, and persistence when collaborating with cross-functional teams.
Balancing Design Ideals with Business Realities
As an early-stage startup, we had to balance our design ideals with the realities of our business. This included deciding whether to include advanced features like suggested prices based on location and parking size in our MVP or defer them to future updates. I collaborated closely with the COO, CTO, and CEO to prioritize features and ensure our development efforts aligned with our business goals and timeline.
